Ken McLarty
James Kenneth (Ken) McLarty

Ken passed away peacefully at the North Shore Health Network – Thessalon Site on Sunday, October 15, 2017. Husband of Rhona for 58 years. Youngest son of the late Alex and Etta McLarty, and brother of the late Jean (Will Mitchell), Grant (Ellenor), Dolena Jessie, and Keith (Dorothy). Proud and caring father of Joanne (Peter Falk), Carolyn (Jamie Mitchell), and Blair (Kristy Cooke). Loving grandfather of Amanda and Mya, Nathan and Lindsey, Colton and Kendra, and great grandfather of Jade. Cousin and uncle to many in the McLarty, McLeod and Currie families, and friend to many earned acquaintances. Graduate of Cody Public School, Sault Collegiate Institute, North Bay Normal School, University of Western Ontario (B.A., M.A., M. Eng.) and Michigan State University (Ph.D.). Educator from 1953 to 1992 for the Korah Township School Area Board, Sault Ste. Marie Board of Education, and, following family tradition, one of the “builders” of Algoma University. Throughout his teaching career, Ken touched many lives and enriched many minds. He was not only an educator, but a life-long learner.
Retirement years were spent in his hometown of Sault Ste. Marie and at Basswood Lake. Visitation to be held at Beggs Funeral Home in Thessalon on Thursday, October 19th from 6 – 8 p.m. Memorial service at Beggs on Friday, October 20th at 2 p.m. Memorial donations to the North Shore Health Network Auxiliary – Thessalon Site, the Algoma Residential Community Hospice (ARCH), Algoma Manor, or the charity of your choice would be greatly appreciated by Ken’s family.
